Debt payoff calculator: snowball vs avalanche
Enter your debts and any extra you can pay each month. See your debt-free date, the interest you pay and the order to pay them off, for both methods.
Snowball or avalanche?
Snowball pays the smallest balance first. You clear whole debts sooner, which keeps many people going. Avalanche pays the highest interest rate first, which costs less in total. The calculator shows the difference in dollars, so you can decide if the quicker wins are worth it.
How it works: every month each debt gets its minimum payment; the extra amount, plus the minimum of every debt you have already paid off, goes to the target debt. Interest is charged monthly at APR ÷ 12. Estimates only.
Track it every month
The Debt Payoff Planner & Tracker builds your snowball or avalanche plan, tells you what to pay each debt this month and tracks what you really pay, so you see if you are ahead or behind. Excel and Google Sheets.
